The Milwaukee Health Department (MHD) has released its 2025 Community Health Assessment (CHA), providing a comprehensive overview of the city’s health landscape. This assessment, built on data and input from over 3,400 residents, highlights five priority health issues: chronic disease, maternal and child health, mental health, substance use, and violence and injury.
Key Findings
The CHA reveals that injury and violence are leading causes of premature death and disability in Milwaukee. Additionally, disparities in education, housing, infant mortality rates, and life expectancy have been documented, particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Community-Driven Initiatives
In response to these challenges, MHD has developed the MKE Elevate Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP). This plan focuses on four priority areas: Racism and Health Equity, Maternal and Child Health, Healthy Built Environment, and Safe and Supportive Communities. The overarching goal is to create a Milwaukee where all residents thrive in safe, healthy, and equitable neighborhoods.
Collaborative Efforts
Addressing these health issues requires collaboration among city departments, healthcare providers, community organizations, policymakers, and residents. By working together, Milwaukee aims to implement strategies that promote health equity and improve the well-being of all its citizens.
