Addressing Milwaukee’s Health Challenges: A Community Perspective

Addressing Milwaukee’s Health Challenges: A Community Perspective

Milwaukee’s 2025 Community Health Assessment (CHA) offers a comprehensive look at the city’s health landscape, identifying five priority issues: chronic disease, maternal and child health, mental health, substance use, and violence and injury. This assessment, informed by data and input from over 3,400 residents, underscores the complex factors influencing health outcomes in our community.

Key Findings from the CHA

The CHA reveals that injury and violence are leading causes of premature death and disability in Milwaukee. Additionally, disparities in education, housing, infant mortality rates, and life expectancy have been documented, particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. These findings highlight the need for targeted interventions to address these pressing concerns.

Community-Driven Initiatives: MKE Elevate

In response to the CHA’s findings, the City of Milwaukee Health Department has launched MKE Elevate, a Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) aimed at fostering a healthier Milwaukee. Supported by the Mayor and the Board of Health, MKE Elevate focuses on community-identified priority areas, including:

  • Maternal and Child Health
  • Healthy Built Environment
  • Safe and Supportive Communities

The overarching goal is to create safe, healthy, and equitable neighborhoods where all residents can thrive. MKE Elevate emphasizes collaboration, aligning strategies, and building partnerships to address these critical health issues.

Community Engagement and Future Steps

Community involvement has been central to shaping MKE Elevate’s priorities. Surveys conducted between May and September 2022 gathered input from over 2,000 residents, identifying top concerns such as healthy foods and nutrition, crime and neighborhood safety, mental health, drug use, and healthcare services. This feedback has been instrumental in developing targeted strategies to improve health outcomes across Milwaukee.

As Milwaukee moves forward, continued community engagement and collaboration will be essential in implementing effective solutions to these health challenges. Residents are encouraged to participate in ongoing discussions and initiatives to help shape a healthier future for all.
