The City of Milwaukee Health Department (MHD) has released its 2025 Community Health Assessment (CHA), offering a comprehensive overview of the city’s health and well-being. This assessment, built using quantitative data and direct input from over 3,400 residents, examines how social factors, lived experiences, and built environments influence health outcomes over time.
Based on community input, the CHA identifies five priority health issues:
Chronic Disease
Chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease continue to affect a significant portion of Milwaukee’s population. The assessment emphasizes the need for preventive measures and improved access to healthcare services to manage and reduce these conditions.
Maternal and Child Health
Maternal and child health remains a critical concern, with disparities in infant mortality rates and access to prenatal care. The CHA calls for targeted interventions to support mothers and children, particularly in underserved communities.
Mental Health
Mental health issues have been highlighted as a growing concern, with increased reports of anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders. The assessment underscores the importance of expanding mental health services and reducing stigma associated with seeking help.
Substance Use
Substance use, including opioid and alcohol abuse, continues to impact individuals and families across Milwaukee. The CHA advocates for comprehensive substance use prevention and treatment programs to address this ongoing issue.
Violence and Injury
Violence and injury are leading drivers of premature death and disability in Milwaukee. The assessment documents disparities in education, housing, and life expectancy following the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the need for community-based initiatives to promote safety and well-being.
The CHA serves as a foundation for the MKE Elevate Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP), which aims to address these priority issues through collaborative efforts and shared goals. Supported by the Mayor, the Board of Health, and the MHD, MKE Elevate seeks to create a Milwaukee where all residents thrive in safe, healthy, and equitable neighborhoods.
Community members are encouraged to engage with the MKE Elevate initiative and contribute to the development and implementation of strategies that address these critical health concerns. By working together, Milwaukee can make significant strides toward improving the health and well-being of all its residents.
